Mother

When I was younger and wanted to grow up
my mother told me son
there are some things that you must learn
you must walk before you run
the world is a dangerous place
and God only knows what you may face
but when I’m through with you
you'll be prepared for what’s to come
As I came of age
it became clear the things she said
when I left the comforts of my home
the challenges were great
I fought my way through loneliness
I fought my way through tears
It took too many years of my life
to find what I hold dear
As I face the challenges before me
I will never stand in fear
my voice it is my legacy
my actions they are my spear
I’ve been knocked down a couple times
but stood up stronger I always found
To live to fight another day
I will never be put down
I see the example before me
I see it in my kin
I see it in the hearts and minds
of people who just want to breathe
but there’s no point in breathing
if your unable to live
you've gotta’ stand up for what you believe
you only get what it is you give
I am only human
Yea I am just a man
I am a Son of a Bitch
who's gonna’ make a stand
Cause there is something more to me
I can see it in my dreams
In order to see the change that I want
the change has to start with me

All you people on the streets
can’t you see can’t you see
your presence alone is important to the scene
but your voice is not enough
if the wall don’t wanna listen
you gotta take the steps
if your gonna close the distance
-It's not easy
To the innocent child who only wants love
staring at me yearning, desperate for a hug
the writers and the readers and the players and the dreamers
the unfortunate people who are victims of fear
to the builders and makers, and the givers, and the takers
and the ones who facilitate our journey to truth
to our friends and our strangers, and our elders, and our peers
the kids on the street who have the right idea
All you people on TV
can’t you see can’t you see
your soundbites and your clips
only make a scene
you legitimize the leaders
you mobilize the masses
stay connected to the ground
you are the greatest asset
-it’s not easy
The politician who represents me, and the neighbor who resents me
And the teacher who taught me that my thoughts are a sin
the soldier in the fox hole and those left home to grieve
to the parents who sent their kids to fight for their beliefs
To the ones who walk the line and the ones who turn the tide
and the ones who can't believe that this is real life
To the martyrs who are gone and the fight that lives on
and those who can admit that they wrong
All you children under desks
don’t tolerate what you see
you are the leaders of a generation
you may need to make a scene
don’t take our lessons at face value
take our mistakes as lessons learned
the future is yours
Seize on what you have earned
-it’s not easy
To the mother who loved me, the father who hugged me
the brothers and sister who were there for me when
the friends who abandoned me, the peers who were mad at me
the acquaintances I annoyed because they didn’t understand me
to the lovers who left me, the crushes who forget me
and those who were there when my wife finally met me
to the children who look up to me, who unconditionally love me
and the stories they tell when I am dead
To the person in the mirror
what do you see what do you see
how will you respond
when you are on the scene
The world is my canvas
I can paint what I want to see
or is it I that is the canvas
and the world paints me?

Here We Are

Here I am
I'm opening my heart up to you
with this tongue
I will share my story with you
with these hands
I will build the word that I dream
with these feet
I will firmly make my stand
All I can say
is that I will stand here unmoved
All I can say
is that I will no longer be fooled
All I can say
is that I'm here and I’m valid too
All I can say
is that I am not afraid of you
Here we are
with open arms we welcome you
this is our home
there’s plenty of room to share with you
this is our will
and we will fight until we find a way
this is our voice
and it will echo until were through
Here you are,
the choice is yours, be strong
Open your mind
you may discover who it is that you are
open your heart
so that you may feel like you are loved
do your part
your worth more than you know

Carry On
03:22
|

When we were young
we'd have our fun
we'd have our jokes, we'd have our games
yea we were young
and we'd sing our song
we'd carry on, we'd carry on
We'd come, we'd come together
we'd stay together for ever
we'd carry on, we'd carry on
we had our dreams, we'd live them out
we had our goals that would come about
we'd carry on, we’d carry on
You said we'd always be friends
we'd stick together till the end
we'd be alive
we'd be alright
we said we'd never be alone
We had our doubts
but we worked 'em out
we'd carry on, we'd carry on
we had our fears
that brought on tears
but we'd carry on, we'd carry on
We didn't know of what would come
we didn't plan on what we'd become
we'd carry on, we'd carry on
nobody told us we'd be afraid
nobody said we'd go insane
but we'd carry on, we'd carry on
You said we'd always be friends
we'd stick together till the end
we'd be alive
we'd be alright
we promised we'd never be
we said that we'd never be
we promised we would never be alone
There came a day
that we had to say
that we were wrong, and carry on
